ITC Power Sys, Motor & Control
Credits Required for Graduation: 4.00
In this certificate the operation and make-up of single and three phase power distribution systems found in commercial and industrial installations are investigated. Common three phase Wye and Delta systems are emphasized. Methods of circuit protection using fuses and circuit breakers are introduced. Characteristics and construction of DC generator and motors are presented along with machine ratings, measurement, and testing. Emphasis is placed on shunt and permanent magnet motors and motor maintenance. Basic single and three phase starting and control systems are introduced along with ladder logic. Methods of controlling AC motors beyond simple on/off control are explored including reduced voltage starting methods, electronic soft starting, and speed control using Adjustable Frequency Drives.
